The best time to install a new roof is when you install a solar system, as it allows you to receive the Federal Investment Tax Credit of 30% on both the roof and the solar system. That means that you effectively receive a very large discount not just on your solar system, but also on the substantial cost of your roof. As part of your solar consultation and site assessment, your roof age (if known, or once estimated) will determine whether we would advise you to replace it. Roughly, 10 years would be young enough, but older than 15 or more is a different story!
The thinking goes that rather than realize later that the roof needs replacing, necessitating removing and storing the solar panels and reconnecting everything after the reroofing is finally completed, the cost and challenges of this can be avoided by getting a new roof in place. Its life will run concurrent with the solar panels’ life and conveniently they will perform in tandem. Lawmakers saw the logic of this and provided for the tax credit to extend to roof replacement for just this reason, further helping homeowners make such improvements!
